Building Services 2

This module is more complex that we learn about the inner components of the services in a building. Throughout the whole module, I get to know how the services that we use in daily life actually operate.

By going to the site visit, we managed to search for the building services’ components by ourselves. This is beneficial to us as we see the real thing rather than the pictures in the notes. During the site visit, we jot down the problems found in the building and had a few discussions among ourselves. The lecturer as well very helpful and follow up our progress during tutorials. He solves our curiosity whenever we show him the components that we are unsure with. As for our presentation, we have to make improvement by simplifying our slides as our presentation time is over the limiting time frame given.

Besides, by doing the tutorial questions, it helps me to understand the lectures better. The lecturer also explains in more detail during the tutorial. In a nutshell, I learnt new things in this module that are useful in future working life.

Construction Technology 3

This subject has covered topics that are related to construction industry. Although we have not exposed to construction in real life yet, but from the notes, we get to know which methods, system, what type of materials needs or equipment that are suitable to use in certain situation. This information will be useful to us when we start working in the industry in the near future.

Similar to CT2, we have to complete 20 sketches for the individual assignments. Since I enjoyed sketching, I actually finished the 20 sketches earlier so that it doesn’t cause burden to me after that. Group assignment, on the other hand goes smoothly which we have chosen ‘Green Building’ as our research topic. By doing research, I get extra knowledge other than the notes. After having discussion, we prefer the traditional method of doing a paper report instead of producing a video as we are not familiar with editing video. At last, we managed to produce a report which everyone contributed in it. From there, I see the power of team as the most important factor that leads to a smooth process of producing the final product.

Lastly, I personally think that Mr Chiew is a very good lecturer. He explains everything clearly to us and sometimes he would draw diagrams on the whiteboard. He also did revision with us to make us understand better. Also, he is responsible to attend class punctually every time and never once he is late for our class. Sometimes, during his class in the afternoon, he also makes jokes to let us stay awake. Listening to him in the class every time is like listening to my grandfather that I told my friends about this.

Management Science

From my point of view, this subject is mainly about ‘Management’. A person must know to ‘manage’ sources in order to control them. It as well gives us information about the skills which a boss must possess and it might be helpful for us in the future. There is one sentence that keep on rolling in my mind is ‘problems=opportunities’ which means every problems we face we can actually turn it into opportunities to success. This ‘equation’ somehow has changed my perception towards every problem I face. I am now taking every difficulty I face in real life as a new challenge for me.
Other than that, from this module, I also learn analytical skills. I believe that in the future working life I will need to analyze the business problems face by myself in order to make a correct decision.

For the group assignment, we managed to relate and use the theories we learnt in class to the business company we created. We had few times of group discussions and I realize that the opinions from everyone are important. We extract the opinions and take the best ideas out of all. Throughout the process, it makes me realize the importance of communication when working together in a group. During the presentation day, I believe everyone in my group had done our best in presenting our ideas where it tests on our communication skill.

Lastly, I personally think that lectures delivered by Mr Leong somehow are an effective teaching to me. He usually gives us real life story in every lecture that helps us understand better and I can actually relate it back to the theories we learn.

Measurement 3

The syllabus is actually not hard if we understand it. Throughout the module, Mr Soon tries his best to explain everything in detail. He is a very good lecturer for me instead. He is friendly to students and whenever we showed our ‘blur face’ he will eventually explain the certain part again until we fully understand it.

In the group assignment, we managed to measure the doors and windows by ourselves. We also learn to be more systematic when jotting down the measurements of different items and arranging the pictures. For me, team work is the most important thing we gained. We distributed parts evenly and helping out each other to check answers in order to produce an accurate dimension. Mr Soon has as well helped us in our assignments when we asked questions about it.

The tutorials questions help me a lot as I learn to solve different questions. For me, the only way to improve my result is to do more exercises as practice makes perfect. There is no shortcut given to success.

Measurement 2

For me, Measurement 2 is not tough as Measurement 1. I found my interest in this subject this semester. I do think that every tutorial exercises that given to us are useful as we can try out different kind of questions. Every time after I done my tutorial, I will either compare with friend’s answer or check with the lecturer. It is good that the work is not drag until the next day. Although sometimes the questions are confusing, but I never give up as practice makes perfect. I take notes on every mistake I did so that I won’t repeat the same mistake anymore.

The assignment is done and everything went smoothly. Group mates are helpful among each other and we managed to complete it within the time given. The works were well-distributed and any problems were communicated and solved among ourselves. Teamwork is definitely important to complete this assignment. We also had a lot of fun along the weeks of doing the assignment.

Taking this course is not being forced, but I found my interest in it. To fulfill my dream as a future Quantity Surveying, I will keep on learning to get to know more about construction industries. Specially thanks to Measurement 2 lecturer, Puan Habizah.

Me and my team members were measuring the classrooms and toilet.

Discussion had been carried out.

Construction Technology 2

By taking this subject, I have gained a lot of knowledge about the construction technologies used in the industries. The topics covered are interesting and the notes are complete. One thing that I like the way of Mr Chiew’s way of teaching is that the important topics are repeated and the notes are well explained. Every lecture he gives is clear and extra info is sometimes given.

I like the individual assignment as I used to sketch and having sketching in QS subject is unexpected. As for the group assignment, everyone has contributed in it. Once the topic was set, parts are distributed among ourselves for everyone to work on it. We had few times of discussions about the difficult parts but problem solved as group members are willing to give ideas. Now, I realized that it is not hard to work as a team if you can communicate well with them. Exchanging ideas are important as well and from there, u can listen to others opinion.

One last thing that I would like to mention is that I practice to be punctual every day as Mr Chiew is never late for class. For the adult like me, I do think that punctuality is very important and he really creates a good impression to me. Thank you very much, Mr Chiew.

The overall of my individual assignment.

Site Surveying

This subject is a little confusing to me. The lecture notes are complete but the theories are hard to understand especially when we need to correct the errors. However, I get to learn so much practical things from this subject. Other than lecture and tutorial class, we had 2 field works and we had the chance to set up the instruments and manage them by ourselves.

Every time before the field work, Mr Chai never fails to explain and brief us on the procedure. Although it was really hot to go under sun, we still managed to finish it on time. My group members are good and helpful. We distributed the works equally among ourselves and all of us had the chance to manage the equipments. Hence, I do think that it is a good experience. After the field work, we had few times of group discussion where we combine the data and do the report together.  Everything was so organized and we managed to compile it on time.

In a nutshell, thank you Mr Chai for your patience in teaching us.

Building Services 1

I gained a lot of knowledge from this subject. Basically, the subject gives information about the services that is built in a building. They are either visible or invisible. They are the basic equipments that a building needs in order to function or for humans to live in.

Firstly, the lecture given by the lecturer, Mr Kam is clear and easy to understand. He always makes sure that we understand his lecture before leaving the class. He is a friendly lecturer as well. On every tutorial class, he explained the answer and sometimes gives extra useful information. We did the tutorials by ourselves every week and passed it up after class.

From the assignment we did, we managed to use different kinds of sources to search for the information, for example, books from the library, e-books, internet and so on. Works are well distributed among the group members. Also, we had few times of discussion in the library where we exchanged ideas. Besides, we had a presentation on the day of submission. Everything went smoothly and accordingly. However, our slides were too long. I shall take this as an experience and will try to make the slides simpler next time. Lastly, the hard works of every group members are very much appreciated.

I am now looking forward to Building Services 2 on the next semester and specially thanks to Mr Kam for sharing knowledge.
